Our winegrower update – March 6th

At last harvest 2018 has kicked off… phew – well for those picking for sparkling base at least. Grapes being harvested for table wines should start coming off in the next 10 days or so – starting with pinot and chardonnay. Our pinot is at least 10 days away.

We love this time of year. The air is filled with nervousness, and expectation combined with a-butterflies in your tummy feeling of excitement. This morning at the Burleigh (coffee local) there was queues of jittery grape growers and winemakers all talking about the holy grail, which is ‘When will the grapes be picked’. Everyone wants them off NOW! Its classic.

Timing is key of course. Will is constantly out in the vineyards at the moment checking with his refrac what the brix (sugar levels) of the grapes are. Walking the rows while tasting and spitting out grapes. It’s not glamorous but it is amazing to watch the difference a day can make to flavour ripeness.

If the rain will stay at bay, we could just have a very good vintage in front of us. Fingers crossed. Keep you posted.

Novum Pinot Noir 2016
95 Points

Beautifully expressive and refined with sleek black cherry and blackberry fruit. It’s rich and seductive but also has freshness and detail. Great structure and harmony too. There’s some black fruit richness but also lovely red fruit crunch. Such a textural wine with real interest and detail, with opulence but also some seriousness.

Novum Pinot Noir 2016
94 points

First release of a brand new wine brand. Quite a rich, flavoursome and oaky red with cigar box, plum, dark berry, anise/spice and liquorice flavours. Weighty, textural wine appealing spicy complexity. Accessible now but should age well.

Novum Pinot Noir 2016
5 Stars

The great value 2016 vintage (5*) was launched in late 2017 under the brand Novum (Latin for ‘new’). Grown exclusively at “hillside organic” sites – including Churton, Yarram and Ashmore/Settlement – it is a deep ruby, highly fragrant red, mouth-filling, savoury and silky-textured, with generous, ripe cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, showing excellent complexity and harmony. Already delicious, it should be at its best 2019+.
